This Week at Havurah

We will read Stonesoup (it connects to the Torah portion, really!), learn a new Hebrew song and make vegetable soup together.  Please bring a few carrots, potatoes, or other soup vegetable for our soup if you can. As always, 9:15 a.m. for bagels, 9:45 ish for services, songs, story and craft.

Upcoming Havurah Events:

Saturday February 11th 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Tu Bishvat and Shabbat Celebration at Earthplace in Westport (Havurah will take a fieldtrip that day)
Learn about trees on a winter hike with Becky, an environmental educator, enjoy gentle sledding (if we have snow), warm up with hot chocolate.  Participate in tree crafts, books, songs, tree-themed brief Shabbat services, even Tree Theater.  Plant parsley to grow at home for your Passover seder.  Tu Bishvat is traditionally the birthday of the trees and a time to focus on trees and nature.  Come celebrate with us at Earthplace (10 Woodside Rd.)  $10 per family paid in advance to the Main Office, includes admission to Natureplace all day.  As always, scholarship money is available to families who need it.  Talk to Rabbi Nicole.

Tu Bishvat Toy Swap
Can you volunteer to help?  See below.
Do your kids have too many toys?  Many parents this time of year are feeling the need to clear out unused toys to make room for all the new ones.  To celebrate the ecological values of Tu Bishvat, the Havurah will be hosting a toy swap

Please place gently used toys in the marked box in the school lobby from January 23 — February 3.    Please only bring toys that are appropriate from children ages 0-6 and that have been gently used.  Toys must be clean and have all their pieces.  NO stuffed animals please.

Everyone is welcome to take a few toys from the table in the school lobby from February 6 — 17.  Toys that are not taken by the end of the week will be donated.  I need a few volunteers to help with this event.  It involves  making sure things are somewhat orderly on and around the toy swap table during the weeks of February 6 and 13.  If you are dropping off your child at B'nai Israel preschool, this should be a very easy volunteer opportunity.  Also, a volunteer to take the leftover toys to Community Closet would be great.

Remember all Young Families Havurah events
are open to everyone.
Feel free to invite your friends!

Resources for Sukkot

Compiled by Rabbi Nicole Wilson-Spiro

Resources for Kids

Books (all of these books can be found in the Havurah library and public libraries)

  • The House on the Roof by David Adler.  This classic is a story of religious tolerance based on a real court case.  Best for ages 4 and up.
  • Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express by Deborah Bodin Cohen.  Loosely based on the arrival of a railroad to Israel in 1892, Engineer Ari has an adventure taking his sukkah on the train.
  • Bubbe Isabella and the Sukkot Case by Kelly Terwilliger.  Bubbe Isabella builds and decorates a beautiful sukkah and welcomes different animals to come celebrate with her.  This book also makes a connection between Sukkot and Simchat Torah, the holiday that immediately follows.

Activity Ideas

  • Build a play sukkah from a cardboard box.  Let the kids eat a snack in it.
  • Build an edible sukkah: Find ideas here http://www.chadiscrafts.com/fun/ediblesukkah.html
  • Use Sukkot as an opportunity to discuss the changing weather and our appreciation for the bounty of fruits, vegetables and beauty of the season.
  • Build a sukkah!  Throw a party!  Camp out in the sukkah!
  • Watch Shalom Sesame, Monsters in the Sukkah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACh9ZM1RG70
