dacShabbat, Dinner AND a Movie:
The Life of Emile Zola
Friday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m.

A film about fighting injustice for the weekend America celebrates the life of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1894 Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish captain in the French army, was falsely convicted of revealing military secrets to Germany. The trial led Theodor Herzl to call for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine and French writer Emile Zola to publicly accuse the military of framing Dreyfus, which led to his eventual exoneration. Come to services at 6:00, share a pot luck dinner and stay for this classic 1937 Oscar Winning film with Paul Muni.

This is not a story of war, but of retreat. This is a story with no enemy, only an amorphous entity that drops bombs from the skies while terrified young soldiers must find a way to carry out their mission until their very last minutes on that mountaintop. This film about the futility and endlessness of war was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and won four Israeli Film Academy Awards.
